5/20/2010 A Healthy Tip from Angela, PSYCH-K* Facilitator
Would you like to be “happy for no reason”? I’m reading a book by that title. The author is transformational speaker Marcie Shimhoff who was featured in the movie The Secret. I’m a true believer in the Universal Law of Attraction, and understand that being “happy for no reason” is what draws the things we want to us. Sometimes feeling that true joy, for an extended period of time, for no apparent reason is not always easy. Marcie has some great insight and exercises that have actually helped me start moving in a direction of feeling good more often than not.
I was really excited to see that she mentioned PSYCH-K* in her book as “an easy and effective energy practice that helps people eliminate limiting patterns and beliefs”.  If you would like to be “happy for no reason” and are interested in knowing more about this process, call D’essence to schedule a free ½ hour PSYCH-K *session.

Your skin is the biggest organ of the body and is our first line of defense when it comes to environmental pollutants. Skin care can be very serious, as well as expensive, subject and most of us have our own routines that we follow faithfully, but did you know that how we eat can have a profound effect on how our skin looks, feels, and ages.

Antioxidants are a very important part of the diet and play a vital role in the aging process of the skin. These nutrients help to neutralize free-radicals, which cause damage to healthy cells and have been associated with everything from age spots and wrinkles to cancer and heart disease. Some studies have shown that antioxidants may be able to go as far as reversing age-related cell damage.

Different antioxidants have different effects on and in the body, for instance the antioxidants found in broccoli and brussel sprouts have been shown to contain compounds that may help prevent breast cancer and those found in pomegranates could reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. The best way to obtain a variety of these nutritional superheroes is to eat fruits and veggies of many different colors and hues, as each indicates' own individual health benefit. So next time you're walking through the produce section at the grocery store buy up the rainbow!

While we're taking care of our skin from the inside out by eating healthy (most of the time) and drinking plenty of water don't forget to use a sunscreen everyday, this is the most important thing you can do for your skin on the outside. Make applying sunscreen a daily habit for everyone in the family. Doing this not only benefits your skin, but your overall health as well.

To some, headaches are a minor nuisance. To others, they can be a debilitating diversion from life. And while some headaches can be caused by allergies or neurological problems, a large number are muscular in nature.  In fact, even when headaches are caused by factors other than muscles, the headaches themselves can bring about painful trigger points, which also cause more headaches.

What is a trigger point? A trigger point is a hyperirritable and electrically active bundle of muscle fibers surrounding a nerve. Trigger points cause pain not only in the affected muscle fibers, but in distinct referral patterns to other areas of the body.

What can you do?

There is hope! Seeing a massage therapist skilled in trigger point therapy is an excellent way you can help take charge of interrupting the vicious pain-spasm-pain cycle, alleviating headaches.

Call me today to schedule a consultation, so we can begin talking about your treatment options.

4/14/2010 A Healthy Tip from Stephanie, CMT

Breathing is one of the most overlooked aspects of good health. Oxygen is fuel for the brain and the body. Good, clean air boosts your physical and mental performance and helps lower stress. It also is a great addition to your stretching routine. When stretching, take a deep breath, as you exhale start your stretch, hold for 30 seconds, take another deep breath and again as you exhale, stretch a little further, holding for 15-20 seconds. Whatever goal you're working for, proper breathing will help you reach it.

“If you know the art of breathing you have the strength, wisdom, and courage of ten tigers.”

The majority of our pre-programmed subconscious beliefs start as early as conception through about age 6. Because of these pre-programmed beliefs and thoughts, the left and right hemispheres of our brain become unbalance is what can cause confusion in decision-making and reaching goals. PSYCH-K* is a process that allows us the negative thoughts with positive. When the subconscious and conscious minds are in agreement, life flows better. If you're interested in knowing more about this process, call D'essence to schedule a 30 minute session.

4/1/2010 A Healthy Tip from Terra, CMT
Good posture is not the military stance of shoulders back, chest out, and chin up that we are used to. It can be much more comfortable than that and can provide multiple health benefits. A good standing posture should be:
  • Ears, shoulders, and hips in a straight line
  • Head should be directly above shoulders
  • Shoulder blades flat against your back (relaxed, not rounded)
  • Pelvis in a neutral position (not tilted or slanted)
  • Knees unlocked
  • Feet pointing forward

Practice this in the mirror and let your body 'remember' what this position feels like. Be mindful throughout your day of where your body and adjust accordingly.
Good posture can help to:
  • Improve balance
  • Relieve undue stress on joints and nerves
  • Ease back, leg, and neck pain by reducing the stretch/strain on muscles that's caused when we slump or slouch
  • Enhances breathing
  • Not to mention it makes us look thinner and more confident, and who couldn't use that

Happy Easter

2/16/2010 A Healthy Tip From Cheray

Due to the cold climate, most of us spend our time indoors during winter months. The lack of sunshine can make us feel sluggish, tired, or even depressed. One way to fight the winter blues is to take a Vitamin D 3 supplement. The sun is our main source of Vitamin D; however, with little or no exposure to sunlight for three to four consecutive months out of the year, our bodies are lacking this essential vitamin.  Vitamin D helps to regulate blood sugar, boost the immune system and maintains calcium balance within the body.

Taking Vitamin D 3 supplements is a great way to maintain healthy levels of Vitamin D during the winter months. When choosing brands and formulas of Vitamin D 3, keep in mind that Vitamin D works closely with Calcium and Magnesium so these three supplements should be taken together if possible.  Spring isn’t too far away so we can look forward to the days when we can roll up our sleeves and soak in Vitamin D the old fashioned way.

2/11/2010 A Healthy Tip From Stephanie
Love is in the air…
Try a little aromatherapy to help heighten your senses for romance, love, intimacy and the meaningful moments of your lives.
·
Sandalwood: Invokes fantasy
·
Lavender: Invites romance
·
Vanilla: Sweet, passionate stimulant
·
Ylang Ylang: Euphoric qualities
·
Jasmine: Increases passion
·
Rose: Increases passion, especially for females
·
Patchouli: Provokes passion, particularly for men
·
Geranium: Relaxation

Mixing several of these scents together has a more powerful affect than using just one alone. A woman can choose two or three as an aromatic blend worn on the skin to reduce stress and enhance intimacy. You can also use these scents in an oil burner to set the scene for a romantic dinner in your home, or try adding a few drops to your massage oil or bathtub for romance.

HINT
: Unlike perfume, essential oils are highly concentrated and often need to be diluted prior to application. When buying essential oils it is always important to look at the label closely to see if it is pre-diluted; if it is, you may be able to use it straight from the bottle. If not, two 'Carrier Oils' that can blend with them may already be in your cupboard - Vegetable Oil and Olive Oil.

EXOTIC NIGHTS BATH
Coconut milk creates a rich, moisturizing bath and leaves skin silky smooth. Ylang ylang is a heady, exotic scent that is lightened by orange.

2 drops ylang ylang essential oil
3 drops orange essential oil
1 can coconut milk

Combine essential oils with the coconut milk and add to a tubful of warm water.
Finish your bath by toweling dry and massaging your body with a fragrant aromatherapy body lotion. Add 5 to 10 drops of your favorite essential oil blend to each ounce of unscented body lotion to create your own unique exotic fragrance.

2/3/2010 A Healthy Tip From Angela

Imagine…

Our brain is a computer,
Our mind is the program,

Our life or reality is the print out.

Our subconscious makes up approximately 95% of our mind. The remaining 5% is our conscious mind. Our life situations are a result of our program; or rather our subconscious and our subconscious beliefs set the limits for what we can achieve. If we want to change our printout; our reality, we need to change our program. With PSYCH-K* it’s a fun, easy process, that allows you to replace thoughts and beliefs that no longer serve you well, with thoughts and beliefs that can help you change your life.

1/27/2010 A Healthy Tip from Terra

Pain and tension in the neck and shoulders is a common occurrence for most of us; whether it’s a chronic condition or one with sudden onset after performing certain activities. Tight muscles in the area are usually to blame and can also contribute to the onset of tension headaches. Here are some simple stretches you can use to try and bring some comfort to these overworked areas.

When performing these stretches NEVER push yourself to the point of discomfort, hold for a slow count of 15-20, and always come out of the stretch SLOWLY. Try these stretches in the shower after the water has had a chance to warm up and relax the muscles to allow for deeper stretching.

  • Extend arms in front of you at about a 45degree angle and clasp hands together, pulling shoulder blades apart, bend head forward so you are looking down. You should feel this stretch down the back of the neck and between the shoulder blades along the spine.
  • Rotate head to the right/left as far as is comfortable for you, then gently rotate head upward so are looking toward the ceiling.
  • Simply putting your neck through its natural range of motion can also help to stretch the muscles in this area. Moving slow and controlled, turn your head to left/right and hold for a slow count, or flex your head forward or backward and hold. Bringing your ear to the shoulder is a great way to stretch the side of the neck, just be sure to keep the opposite shoulder pinned down by either sitting on your hand or grasping your leg.
I hope these exercises can be added to your self-care routine and bring some relief to these troubled areas. Also refer to Stephanie Love’s Healthy Tip for Dec. 23 on how to get some pinpoint treatment you can do for yourself, in between your scheduled massage appointments, that is.

1/15/2010 A Healthy Tip from Jessica

"After feasting on Christmas dinners and holiday cookies, our waistlines can feel like they've been pushed to their limits. And in the spirit of resolutions for the New Year, many often make the promise to themselves to lose weight.
While it's great to do yourself the favor of shedding excessive weight, remember, the most important thing is to get healthy.

What can you do?

1. Get your body moving - Get your heart rate up for at least 20 minutes a day!  Go for a brisk walk or even crank up the stereo and dance to your favorite songs!
2. Try to avoid processed foods - If it comes in a wrapper or a box, keep it to a minimum.
3. Get a massage, for the mind and body - Massage maximizes the flow of blood, rich with nutrients and oxygen, thus burning more calories and keeping muscles limber and healthy. Massage is also great at reducing stress levels, which can boost your energy and immune system.
4. Get a good night's sleep - Often neglected, a restful night is paramount in maintaining one's body.
5. Try Yoga - Yoga is a great way to become totally aware of your mind and body in a rewarding and positive environment. Call Phil Hansing, our Registered Yoga Teacher to get involved in a class!

Well, the New Year is here, and as I reflect back over 2009, something that I’m grateful to have become more aware of, is that our overall health isn’t just about our physical bodies, it is about our minds, our emotions and our spirit. Taking that into consideration, I’ve learned that combining different tools or processes has actually helped propel me forward into becoming more whole.

Colette has done a wonderful job of incorporating services at D’essence that complement each other. I feel as D’essence grows in the New Year, the services will continue to enhance each other, in order to help us and our clients become more balanced; mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

Out with the old, and in with the new. Set intentions for yourself to grow and expand into who you truly are. The offerings at D’essence can help you along your path.

12/31/2009 - A Healthy Tip from Phil

It’s hard to believe that another year has passed and we stand on the cusp of a New Year, and a New Decade as well.

This is the traditional time for making Resolutions, and that very word “resolution”, and its root word “resolve” often contribute to the failure of the intention simply by being loaded with effort. Simply replacing the words of our inner critic with more positive phrases can produce amazing results. Come in and talk with Angela, who can provide the insight and guidance to change your self-defeating inner dialog and self-image.

Also try to treat yourself gently and with understanding, thinking simply of being kind to yourself and to your body. Think of things that will increase your overall sense of well-being, remove sources of pain and discomfort and add years – happy, healthy, and active years – to your life.

Easy ways to accomplish this are to get outside and enjoy fresh air and sunshine on those days when the weather permits, to breathe deeply and truly observe nature rather than trying to power-walk to the next level (although) this certainly has its benefits as well). Enjoy the feelings of becoming more clear- headed as you bring fresh, crisp air into your body. Give yourself the gift of relaxation and relief from aching muscles by having a massage or begin to enjoy the feelings of gently regaining your flexibility, strength, and balance in a Yoga or Pilates class.

The papers and internet are full of information about the rarity of this New Year’s Blue Moon, a second full moon in a given month and one that occurs on New Year’s Eve only once every 19 years. This New Year’s Eve is special, so approach it appropriately. Like-wise, YOU are special; therefore treat your SELF especially well, with healthy self-interest. You will have more joy to send into the world and into other people’s lives when you first give yourself the gift of well-being.

Given the tumultuous events of the past year and the past decade, my suggestion is to give some thought to leaving those events in the past and to reflect in positive ways about the next year and the next decade, making the care of yourself – YOUR body and spirit – a priority.

We all wish you health, peace, and prosperity in the coming year and in the next decade!

12/23/2009 - A Healthy Tip from Stephanie

The cards are addressed, the presents are wrapped, the stockings are hung and there is an ache in your arms and back. What do you do? A simple tennis ball will do wonders!! Add a clean tube sock and you have your own personal pinpoint massage tool for your knots.

For forearms:The tennis ball can be set on a hard surface, such as a table, and with the forearm directly on top of ball, apply pressure with other hand and roll back and forth. This can also be done on the top of the forearm using the other hand to move the tennis ball.  This can help relax the tensed muscles you developed from writing and wrapping.

For shoulders:Put the tennis ball in a tube sock. The sock can be “thrown” over your shoulder, using a wall, lean back to apply pressure to the sore spots. This one can have that “hurt so good” feeling, so take it slow and remember to breathe through the process. The tennis ball can be moved all over the back to help with the tight muscles.

When the holidays are over and it is time to relax, give us a call to schedule a full body massage…

Have a wonderful and safe holiday season!!

Merry Christmas and God bless!

Stephanie Love, CMT

12/10/2009 - A Healthy Tip from Terra
The time of year is upon us when our busy schedules become even more hectic, already tight budgets and bank accounts get stretched past their maximum, and suddenly those elastic banded slacks look pretty good. As we look at our mile long list of things to do it’s easy to forget that we’re not the only ones who need to meet such demands. We mumble under our breath when we get behind the couple leisurely pushing their cart through the grocery; they may have just as much to do as you or I, if not more, but have chosen to take the time to enjoy the season and each other. When we’re stuck in traffic how dare the car in front of us let someone in, don’t they know I’m in a hurry; they probably are as well but in hopes someone will allow them the same courtesy, not to mention the fact traffic is going nowhere fast,  they choose to let the car in. As we go about our days rushing from work and work parties, to school programs, family gatherings, and of course, the endless search for the “perfect” gift it seems we lose sight of what the most wonderful time of year is truly all about.

The gift of wellness is one that will be enjoyed by the body, mind, and soul. We offer gift certificates so your loved ones can choose the service or services that would benefit them the most; be it an instructed yoga class, one of our many massage modalities, a PSYCH-K* consultation, Ion Cleanse, sea salt scrub, or mud body wrap. The “perfect” gift for anyone on your list is waiting for at you at D’essence, you can even purchase one over the phone and have it sent to the address of your choice saving you time.

As we go through this holiday season please remember that the best gifts cannot be wrapped in pretty paper and tied with a bow, they are free and accessible to everyone, and shouldn’t be reserved strictly for the holiday season; the gifts of love, kindness, and courtesy. Don’t just share them among family and friends; give these gifts to all you meet. Wishing you and yours the happiest of holidays and a prosperous new year.

Blessed Be

11/30/2009 - A Healthy Tip from Angela

The upcoming Christmas season, could potentially be the most stressful time of the year for many of us; the pressure of finding the perfect gift ideas, sitting in traffic, finding a parking spot less than a mile from our destination, the hustle and bustle of pushing through crowds, preparing a menu and the meal, not to mention the tension that some family members carry with them, and love to share with the group.
Do you realize the physical implications of stress on the body? When we get stressed out, our bodies react with a response called “fight or flight”. It is a response that is hard-wired into our brains, that was originally designed to protect us from harm.
There is evidence supporting that excessive stress can lead to problems causing headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, and high blood pressure, just to name a few. It can create susceptibility to infections, chronic fatigue, depression, and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and allergies.

By changing our perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, or emotional reactions to the stressors in our lives, we can actually minimize our anxieties and help lessen the “fight or flight” response, which can in excess, be detrimental to our bodies.

PSYCH-K* is a process we can use to help change our outlook on life, allowing us to see things from a different angle. This quote from an unknown author says it well, “Peace is not the absence of conflict, but the ability to cope with it”. Do your mind, body and spirit a well deserved favor. Don’t stress out over the holidays, breath and go with the flow. Your overall health will appreciate the gift!

11/18/09-- A Healthy Tip from Phil, Registered Yoga Teacher

How is your back feeling? If you are like the vast majority of Americans, the answer may very well be, “not so good”.
You are only as young as your back, and as anyone who has experienced back-pain will testify, back-pain will affect every part of the body and can severely limit a person’s ability to move. The inability to move, sit, walk and sleep can lead to severe depression.
Well, here’s good news for people with chronic back pain: a recent study funded by the National Institute of Health shows that practicing yoga can relieve chronic back pain and the depression associated with it, better than conventional pain medication.
The study, published in the journal ”Spine” shows that persons with chronic back pain assigned to groups participating in twice weekly yoga classes experienced greater back function and  reduced pain and significant reduction in depression compared to those assigned to groups receiving pain medication alone. The study also showed the benefits of yoga practice lasting months after the yoga regimen had ended.
The spine is the main structural support for the body, and the key to a healthy, pain-free back is flexibility in the spine.  Constructed mainly of bone and the cartilaginous disc material, the blood supply is more limited to the spine than to organs or muscle, which effects the health and healing of the spine itself. By moving the spine in all directions by practicing yoga, we keep the muscles surrounding the spine lengthened and toned and force more blood into the area, encouraging healing and health.
We also recommend teaming yoga practice with massage therapy for effective and long-lasting results.
We are skilled at using props and adjusting the postures to make yoga practice easier for beginners . Come see how yoga can improve your life!
We offer classes:  Monday and Wednesday evenings,  5:30 – 7 (and currently Monday classes are free; just register ahead of time)
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings , 9-10:30
All classes include a guided relaxation during the end of the class.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

11/12/2009 -- Tip from Stephanie, CMT

Stress is defined as any stimulus or factor that threatens the health of the body or has an adverse effect on its functioning.

The Effects of Stress on the Body:

·         Heart rate quickens

·         Breathing becomes deeper and faster

·         Blood flow to the muscle increases

·         Blood sugar level rises to release more energy

·         Increased alertness triggers emotional reactions

Medication can help the symptoms of stress, but it will not cure the problem until you remove the causative factors. Even mild stress can be a contributory factor in conditions such as ulcers, migraines, heart attacks, eczema, diabetes, and even cancer.

There are a few exercises you can do that can help relieve stress.

Practice with fingers first. Tense with fingers curled in a fist position and hold them for 5 seconds and then relax, allowing the sense of relaxation to travel up your arms and into your shoulders. Breathe deeply. Repeat this with your toes. Rotate your wrist and then your ankle. Stretch them and relax. Clasp your hands together and hold for a few minutes.

The adrenal gland reflex can be found on the hand at the base of the web between the thumb and index finger on the palm side. Act as if you are clasping hands, moving the left hand so that the thumb area fits in the bend of the right hand. Wrap fingers of right hand around the fleshy part of the thumb area on left and apply gentle pressure. This may be a tender spot so go at it a little at a time. Hold this area until pains subsides and repeat on the other hand. Important: Remember to BREATHE!

It is important to take time to relax every day.

Enjoy everyday… and have a wonderful Thanksgiving,

Please come join us for our 1st anniversary Open House, Friday, December 4, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

A survey done by the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) found that the majority of individuals who have sought out massage therapy in the past year have done so for the numerous health/medical benefits massage has to offer. Stress and its effects on the body are one of the main issues associated with massage therapy. Of course the reduction of stress has numerous health benefits but massage has much more to offer, as far as health/medical benefits go.  According to the 2009 Massage Therapy Consumer Survey Fact Sheet provided by AMTA:

  • This year 25% of Americans, ages 35-44, talked to their doctor about massage therapy, compared to 14% last year
  • 52% of individuals who talked with their doctor about massage therapy said it was recommended or encouraged
  • 86% of Americans surveyed believe massage therapy can be effective in reducing pain
These beliefs have been backed by multiple studies which have shown massage therapy to be effective in relieving some of the symptoms associated with certain serious health conditions. These include the reduction of migraines, back pain, lowering blood pressure, and symptoms of carpal tunnel; to name a few. Following are links that will take you to the AMTA website which will provide more information on the benefits of massage and what to look for in a therapist. So make an appointment with a certified massage therapist today, it’s so much more than just an indulgence; its serious health care.

10/28/2009 -- A Tip from Angela
The Thanksgiving holiday comes during the perfect season in my opinion.  All things living start slowing down, a perfect reminder of how we should slow ourselves down, and benefit from becoming more aware of all that we are appreciative of and grateful for.  It also gives us the opportunity to evaluate our lives and what we really desire and what will bring us to our highest good.  Sometimes when we do put our finger on our hearts desire, whether it’s a more rewarding job, fulfilling relationships, or better health, the real trick is achieving it.

It’s the negative pre-programmed beliefs we each have regarding the things we want, that keep us from popping the top off our goals.  By replacing a negative belief with a positive, self-affirming, self-supporting belief, our lives become more aligned with our desires, allowing us to reach that which we’re aiming for.

“All that we are is the result of what we have thought.  The mind is everything.  What we think, we become”.  ~ Siddartha

Believe me, I’ve learned that it does make a difference what we think & how we feel.  And sometimes we get so caught up in the things that aren’t going right in our lives, placing more focus on what’s not going our way.  We forget that being grateful and appreciative are the core of manifesting our desires and allow us to benefit the world around us.

With the simplicity of PSYCH-K we don’t have to figure out, pick apart, or analyze where the negative beliefs come from and why they affect us the way they do.  We just state what we do want as our goal and replace, within the subconscious mind, that which we do not want.  For example: “I am grateful and appreciative every moment of my life”.  If that was downloaded into each of our subconscious minds, what a difference it would make in our lives and every life we touch.

Come in to discuss a free 15-Minute consultation how PSYCH-K can affect your goals.  Call in and schedule an appointment today!  Tis the season for positive change...Get a head start before the new year!

10/20/09 - A Healthy Tip from Phil
I sometimes joke with students in my yoga classes, telling them "You are required to breathe throughout the entire class!" This is just a reminder to take full, complete breaths. Of course, nobody could go for an entire hour without breathing, but the majority of people literally use only one-third of their lungs when they breathe. In our society, with so much of our work sitting and with the highly competitive, rushed nature of life in general, most people are 'upper-chest' breathers; people who rarely use the full capacity of their lungs.

Since the lungs function is to collect and get rid of toxins (like carbon dioxide) from the blood, failing to bring fresh clean air into the bottom of the lungs means we don't get rid of the toxins that accumulate there. Rapid, shallow breathing is our body's natural response to stress and fear, and by breathing this way we unconsciously cause the body's nervous system to prepare the body to run or fight. Imagine what this constant subtle tension does to you physically and emotionally. No wonder those desk-jobs leave us feeling exhausted!

Develop the habit of 'checking-in' with your breathing. Notice how you are breathing, especially when you feel tense, stressed, irritable or simply tired. Take a few deep, full breaths. Feel your belly and ribs expanding. Try simply taking 10 deep breaths in the morning and again at night and notice the effect this has on your body and attitude.

Finding a little peace and creating a healthier body is as simple and natural as breathing.

Come in for yoga classes and learn breathing techniques that will create a healthier body and improved sense of well-being.

10/15/2009 A tip from Stephanie Love, CMT
The holidays are right around the corner…and with it comes a lot of stress.

Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. While eliminating anxiety and pressure altogether in this fast-paced world may be idealistic, massage can, without a doubt, help manage stress. This translates into:

·         Decreased anxiety

·         Enhanced sleep quality

·         Greater energy

·         Improved concentration

·         Increased circulation

·         Reduced fatigue

Look for our coupon every month for our specials. You can find this the first Saturday of the month in the Elkhart Truth newspaper located in the “clip and save” coupon booklets. We also offer gift certificates that could help ease the stress of gift giving.

Now is a perfect time to schedule a massage to help you (or a loved one) go through this holiday season a little more stress free.

Remember to take some time for yourself….
Have a wonderful and blessed day!!

10/6/2009 A Tip from Terra Trytko, CMT

It is a known and proven fact that our physical health can be influenced by our emotional state. For example, the effects stress has on the body are well known; but stop and think about the opposite end of the spectrum for a moment. If stress and anxiety can wreak havoc on our health what could joy and laughter do for us?

¨      A study at the University of Maryland found laughter may reduce the risk of heart disease because it can relax blood vessels and causes the release of nitric oxide which may reduce clot formation and cholesterol deposition.

¨      Another study done by researchers at Loma Linda University schools of Allied Health Professions and Medicine, found that individuals who watched a 60-minute comedy had decreased levels of stress inducing hormones and increased activity in infection fighting antibodies.

¨      A big belly laugh can empty out our lungs of residual oxygen; this has a cleansing effect similar to deep-breathing exercises which brings fresh oxygen into our lungs and sends oxygen-enriched blood and nutrients throughout the body.

¨      Laughter even helps to “exercise” the muscles. It has been shown to provide some conditioning for cardiac, facial, abdominal, and back muscles.

¨      Above all joy and laughter reduce stress.

As we go through our day we seem to get trapped into an autopilot mode where everyday tasks become nothing more than “business as usual” and our days become a blur. Even the times spent with family and friends seem to disappear before our eyes. So often we get caught up in everything that we think needs to be done, and I use this term loosely, that we don’t see, or allow ourselves to experience, the peace and joy that surrounds us every day. Take time to look, to listen, to give thanks, and always take time to laugh.

                                                     Have a Blessed Day!
